ASCAT – Metop’s Advanced Scatterometer
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Wind scatterometers already flown on ESA’s ERS-1 and ERS-2 satellites have demonstrated the value of such instruments for the global determination of sea-surface wind vectors. These highly successful instruments – part of the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) – were conceived about twenty years ago. During the intervening period, there has been a considerable evolution in the capabilities of spaceborne hardware. Figure 1 indicates the form of the variation of backscattering coefficient with relative wind direction (at a fixed incidence angle) for a range of wind speeds.

Mesoscale winds from the new ASCAT scatterometer
Introduction satellite based scatterometers provide high resolution all-weather wind vector fields over the seas. Wind speed and wind direction are provided at high accuracy under all weather conditions. The allweather EsA ERs scatterometer observations have proven its significant impact for the forecasting of fast developing and severe weather. Moreover, scatterometer wind fields are provided ...
متن کاملASCAT-B NWP Ocean Calibration and Validation
On September 17, 2012 the Metop-B satellite with onboard the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT-B) has been successfully launched. For the ASCAT-B scatterometer, corrections are derived with the use of the NWP ocean calibration (NOC). These corrections are used in the ASCAT wind data processor in order to obtain high-quality winds. The NOC-calibrated ASCAT-B wind product is examined and its quality ...

A new scatterometer, the so-called Advanced scatterometer (ASCAT), onboard MetOp-A satellite was successfully launched on October 19 2006. During the commissioning phase one of the main goals is to accurately calibrate the instrument. The radar backscatter has been calibrated using three groundbased transponders only in February 2008. However, stable and good quality ASCAT winds are produced ro...

The EUMETSAT Metop-B satellite with onboard the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) has been successfully launched on September 17, 2012. ASCAT-B onboard Metop-B is identical to the already operational scatterometer ASCAT-A onboard Metop-A which was launched in 2006. KNMI has further developed an ocean calibration method for ASCAT-A, based on Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) wind inputs, the so-ca...
